| Two motorists were killed Thursday in a three-car accident on N.C. 211 in West End.
The head-on collision occurred at about 2:45 p.m. in front of the Log Cabin Country Store near Puckett Lane.
Phillip McKay Hutchinson, 69, of Mount Gilead, was traveling south on the highway in a white Chevrolet pickup truck. He crossed the center line and struck Kurt Thomas Sellers, a 57-year-old West End resident who was traveling north in a red Jeep Wrangler.
A red Honda CRV was also struck by the truck, according to an accident report filed by Trooper J.L. Garner of the state Highway Patrol.
The three vehicles came to rest on the northbound shoulder of the road. Sellers, who was trapped in the wreckage of his vehicle, died at the scene.
Hutchinson went into cardiac arrest as a helicopter was arriving to airlift him to a regional trauma center. He was pronounced dead at an improvised landing pad near the site of the wreck.
The driver of the Honda suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Her name has not been released by authorities.
Traffic was diverted from multiple roads leading to N.C. 211 while emergency workers were on the scene. The Moore County Sheriff's Office announced at 6 p.m. that the highway had reopened to traffic.
Investigators said Thursday there were no immediate witnesses to the wreck, and it is not yet known how fast the vehicles were traveling. Garner’s report said alcohol was not involved in the accident.
Sellers is the third West End resident killed on N.C. 211 this year. Steven Markel McGregor, 23, was struck by a vehicle and killed in May while walking to work at the McDonald’s in Seven Lakes. Robert Goodman Jr., 68, was also fatally struck while attempting to cross the highway in October. |
